People behaving badly

I couldn't put this book down. Having experienced the Nairobi Races in the nineteen fifties and recently read Duff Cooper's diaries I was ready for it. Life for some in the early part of the twentieth century, unless they were in the trenches in France and Belgium, was one long holiday. You needed lots of money, which this woman and her relatives and friends did have. There are shades of the Drones Club and Wooster , but it is a wonderful description of what humans get up to if they have little sense of responsibility and no job to speak of.Idina Sackville was an excessively self indulgent person who married five times. She seems to have been a pretty undiscriminating sex addict, and constancy just didn't enter into it.Having said that, she was kind to her Kenyan servants and probably pleasant to know. However what do you say about a mother who leaves her children as she did? Selfish? Yes.It was quite fashionable for the rich to send their children off to boarding school so they could enjoy themselves, so she was far from alone in her attitude, although more extreme than most.Hypocrisy was the creed of the upper classes-sleep with whom you like, but don't make it official.Many came to a sticky end, such as Lord Errol, Idina's third husband, who was murdered, and her various friends who ended up as drug addicts.Idina did read a lot, we're told, but otherwise she and her friends appear very shallow, with their silly card and key games. I enjoyed the passage about the fourth husband, who wanted to shoot the lovers, so much so that Idina had a servant beat drum when his car was seen in the distance, so her current lover could make an escape.Loved the book-it's always interesting to read about people behaving badly, especially when I must have met some as a child, without any idea of what they were up to.

excellent. IF you enjoyed the film `White Mischief` then you will enjoy this factual story of the Happy Valley as it used to be.This time with real characters.

an intersting read

as it gives a portrait of a period long gone and so different from our lives now. Well written and rather sad.
