1A Waste of Time
By musicgirl
This should have been fascinating, given Previn's life so far. Unfortunately, it is both badly and glibly written, the syntax poor and the spelling appalling, eg. phenominal, accoustic and, amazingly in both the text and index, Tony Morrison! The early and Hollywood years are interesting but out of proportion with Previn's later life, and there is remarkably little discussion of Previn's often calamitous private life, with no reasons given for his leaving his first, pregnant wife at all. Freedland simply says that Mr Previn doesn't want to talk about it. No mention either of Dory Previn's mental illness. Because Freedland has spent so long in discussion with Previn (who he says edited the book!) it has also become little more than a star-struck hagiography. There is no assessment of Previn's compositional skills, even by a third party, or his world-position as a composer: there are only occasional quotes by Previn himself saying that such-and-such was a 'good piece' or not. Only one quote re the Guitar Concerto by John Williams approaches an intelligent criticism. That the same points could fairly have been made about the Morrison songs was, of course, ignored by Freedland. This is a silly book and a waste of time by all concerned, including the reader.

3An enjoyable read!
By D. Arrowsmith
I have recently read three biographies/memoirs of orchestral conductors, Boult, Previn and Solti. This volume is very enjoyable, light in style and lacking in technical jargon which can mar volumes of this type of material. Previn's background in Hollywood receives extensive treatment, perhaps a bit too much as the book is unbalanced a bit because of it. I would have liked a bit more on Previn's likes and dislikes and explanations of the gaps in his repertoire. He was a renowned devotee of English music, recording a lot of the repertoire Adrian Boult had recorded; the Vaughan williams symphonies, The Planets etc. He did also develop a reputation as a good conductor of some of the Russian repertoire also. I have recordings of Shostakovich and Prokofiev which remain in the catalogue and are still recommended versions. There are a fair few interesting anecdotes to spice things up a bit. Probably not a book for musicologists but a good read for fans of Previn and anyone interested in the daily grind of an orchestral conductor.
