From the very first sentence, "Once upon a time, when cups were plates and knives and forks grew in the ground". you know this is going to be a book that challenges perceptions and helps children to think critically about what they might have taken for granted. An old woman finds a tired eagle on her doorstep, thinks it is a peculiar-looking pigeon and takes it upon herself to cut and clip until he looks more like a standard one. The eagle finally escapes and is still instantly recognised as one by a fellow eagle, which helps him recover his true self. It is a story that gives you loads to discuss with your children. My seven-year-old twins and I have talked about motivation, conformity, prejudice, assumptions, stupidity, jumping to conclusions, triumph over disaster, etc, etc (not in those terms, of course) and it has really opened their minds. Vividly illustrated too. Great buy.

The Old Woman and the Eagle I love this tale for its simple demonstration of how we can twist our perception, of something that we have not encountered before, something fresh and new to us, so much that it becomes something distorted and unable to function. Yet how it goes on to illustrate that this can also be because the thing itself, be it an idea, or a bird, has attempted to rest in an unsuitable mind, or place.

By M. J. Gibson
This is a wonderful far-reaching tale, with much to teach young and old alike. The illustrations are beautiful and have captured my little girl's imagination as has the old woman - why does she want to change the beautiful eagle?! Highly recommended.
