An excellent book, although not comprehensive.B.F. Skinner is a renowned psychologist, who significantly contributed to the behaviourist school of thought. In effect, he continued the work of Watson (the founder of behaviourism). Behaviourism, put simply (and crudely), argues that human behaviour is determined by biology (our genes delimit the parameters of our actions) and by our social interactions (our upbringing, our family relations, our education, etc., which condition our personality). The unique blending of these does, for each of us, create our individuality. We are, as individuals, determined. This has major ramifications ... Here Skinner argues that any talk of 'freedom' in relation to the behaviour of individuals is nonsense. No-one chooses how to behaviour. In consequence, the individual can't be blamed for wrong-doing; nor praised for good behaviour. Hence, the notion of 'dignity' becomes redundant. Thus the title of the book makes sense. I've read this book twice thoroughly, and flicked through it again on several occasions. It's very clearly written, and Skinner offers an interesting and thought-provoking set of arguments. For the most part, I am inclined to agree with his conclusions.Yet I think the topic deserved a more substantial discussion. Skinner tends not to engage with the work of others, but merely advances his own ideas. I would have liked to see him explore opposing theories. Of course, he does so in other books. But I think he could have expanded this particular book.Notwithstanding its limitations, it's a major contribution.

I am giving four stars for the condition of the book and speedy delivery. The book itself is really extraordinary and useful. I bought it for my university course and I was very sceptical initially because all I knew about Skinner was his cruel experiments carried out on tiny animals. However, if I am leaving the cruelty aside, the way he expresses his ideas and his analysis itself are very logical and well written. He has decided to use a less technical and sophisticated language so that most people would understand his work. It really helped me better understand the mechanisms of perceived freedom and many types of conditioning. There were times when I'd read and smile because he shed light on simple things that happen every day and we are not aware of them. Great work indeed!

I enjoyed this book beause it made me realise how much the enviroment affects our lives and who we are. It also made me realize how our enviroment can (and is) being manipulated to achive desired behaviour.
