I particularly liked his books on the collecting trips and this one

I read the Gerald Durrell books as they were published back in the 60s, etc. I particularly liked his books on the collecting trips and this one, the Bafut Beagles, was my ultimate favourite. The Fon of Bafut became quite a cult figure in my eyes. I particularly loved the humour running through all of the books. Laughter was never far away and the sketches brought the text alive. In those days I lent my books out and wouldn't necessarily have them returned. Now, I am renewing my acquaintance with as many as I can get and I urge others to do the same. Humour is sparse in literature these days and when you can have humour and education in each of these books it uplifts the spirit. For young and old alike - Gerald Durrell had a great capacity to put his conservation message across with absorbing interest and in an extremely well-written, lighthearted fashion. The world is a poorer place without him.
