An excellent tale for young children.

This is a charming folk tale of a boy who is only half a boy and needs to discover what it takes to become a complete person. Full of interesting suggested or symbolic meanings and at the same time a terrific story in itself for children who might appreciate fairy tale-type stories.

a great buy

I have two boys aged 4 and 6 and they loved this story. Its a great book because you can revisit it again and again as part of different topics. It has quite an esoteric meaning traditionally, and this is what I personally was looking for. It was also an extra bonus to see my husband's face hearing me read a story to our children which his grandmother told him years ago when he was a boy back in Libya. (These stories are authentic tales passed down from generation to generation throughout the middle east and Afghanistan)A great book if you are looking for traditional tales with a deeper meaning to life!The pictures/paintings are also lovely!

A Gem of a Book

Amid the wealth of elaborately produced childrens' books it isn't easy to find one where the marriage between illustration and narrative is so balanced and pleasing as it is in Neem the Half-Boy. Of course the title itself holds intrigue. What is a "half-boy" and how could such a creature come to be and continue to exist? Idries Shah's rendering of the tale has the pace and touch of wry humour which great storytellers know how to use to draw listeners into their circle. At the same time illustrators Midori Mori and Robert Reeves beautifully conjure for us the story's setting and characters, the fabled country and court of Hich-Hich, amplifying the story's effect without intruding on it. With its "never-never" setting and magical trappings the story introduces important matters in the lightest possible way: inconstancy of purpose, heedlessness, distortion of advice, as well as level-headed compromise and problem-solving. But don't imagine these themes, subtle as they are, will intrude on your kids' enjoyment of the tale. They will love it! This is a wonderful book in every way.
